Honor Flight of Southern Colorado

Honoring Those Who Served

Honor Flight of Southern Colorado is part of the Honor Flight Network, a national organization with a mission of honoring our nations’ veterans by bringing them to Washington DC to visit the memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice. Honor Flight of Southern Colorado takes veterans from the World War II, Korea and Vietnam eras on a three day, all-expense paid trip to our nation’s capital.

HONOR FLIGHT #18 Is One for the History Books!

What an amazing weekend we had of inspiration, love, healing, laughter and tears.

We arrived on Friday to a lovely spring day in Washington DC. During dinner our veterans shared stories and got to get to know each other better. We called it an early night so everyone could rest up for the big day on Saturday.

Saturday morning mother nature decided to be onery, but a little intermittent rain did not deter our heroes.  We toured the WWII memorial and Korean War memorial and honored friends and loved ones, brothers and sisters in arms as we walked along the black granite memorial dedicated to those lost in Vietnam.  After a driving tour of Washington DC, we end the day at the Air and Space Museum. What a treat that was to see so many planes depicting the history of aviation in our country. Dinner Saturday night gave us a chance to share stories of these patriots who answered the call to serve.

Sunday morning dawned bright as we made our way to Arlington National Cemetery and the Air Force Memorial. It was soon time to head back home, our burdens a little lighter, our hearts a little fuller.  After a delay in Baltimore, we headed back home where we were greeted by a hero's welcome.

On behalf of the board of Honor Flight of Southern Colorado I would like to thank our cherished veterans for allowing us to accompany you on this trip. I would like to thank the countless volunteers who helped us put this flight together, the local businesses who contributed, KOAA News 5 and 95.1 KATC Radio for telling our story. To the guardians, medical staff and photographer, we could not have done this without you. Thank you to the color guard, band and battling betties who welcomed us home and to Gen. Kristin Goodwin for your inspiring words.

They say it takes a village, in our case, it takes a family, you are all part of our Honor Flight Family.
